Meeting some amazing library helpers at the Pupil Library Assistant of the Year Award 2019

Always an uplifting & inspiring experience, I recently attended the prestigious Pupil Library Assistant of the Year Award Ceremony. This is an annual national award which celebrates both the achievements, skills and hard work of student helpers in school libraries and the valuable effect that being a pupil library assistant can have on the pupils' own well-being.

Capita Reading Cloud are delighted to support this initiative through sponsorship and have done so since the award began in 2014. The competition is organised and judged by the School Libraries Group of CILIP, the Library and Information Profession and the School Library Association.

This year, for the first time the ceremony took place within the Penguin Random House offices on the 10th floor overlooking the Thames. All seven finalists from schools across the UK (with their proud school librarians and families present) had been nominated by their school community.

It was lovely to see that each finalist had a guest author including Robin Stevens, Steve Cole and Chris Priestley who read out a summary of quotes from the judging panel as to why they had been nominated. This made everything that bit extra special. I also got the opportunity to meet each of the finalists and their librarians and give them some of our Pupil Librarian and Reading Ambassador badges which I am sure will be worn proudly when they get back to their school libraries!

The thrilled and very worthy winning pupil library assistant, was Rhiannon Salvin from Firth Park Academy, Sheffield, a school who are using Reading Cloud. Alison Edwards, the school librarian, said that Rhiannon went above and beyond her library duties and that her contribution and work ethic were invaluable.

Perhaps one of your school library helpers could be a nominee next year?

Here's a great photo of all the finalists, Rhiannon 2nd pupil from the left!
